VINCE WU

Future of SustainTech,
Youth Advocate

Vince Wu, a 15-year-old student from California, is driven by his passion for utilizing computer science to address pressing environmental issues. With a keen interest in research, he actively engages in projects that focus on agriculture, data science, and the environment, demonstrating a strong commitment to exploring innovative solutions to global issues.

Growing up, Vince’s time spent hiking, camping, and embracing the outdoors with BSA Scouts ignited a profound love and appreciation for the beauty of nature. However, during those formative years, he couldn’t help but notice the relentless wildfire seasons that blanketed the air with toxic gray smog coupled with the distressing reports of record-breaking natural disasters unfolding globally. Witnessing the devastating consequences of climate change and environmental degradation, Vince was compelled to delve deeper and channel his own abilities toward making a positive impact on the environment.

Vince’s research at the intersection of computer and environmental science has yielded significant accomplishments, including scientific publication and a Grand Award at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). Notably, his latest study focused on leveraging weather data to predict honey bee foraging activity with the aim of assisting farmers in implementing precision farming techniques. Currently, he is working on a project that involves modeling the decision-making process behind farmer pesticide use to better understand how to promote healthier practices.

Vince is a passionate environmentalist who actively engages in environmentalism within his community. He serves as the Sustainability Lead of his school’s Eco Club, organizing various environmental events and initiatives to encourage others to make a positive impact on the environment.

Vince extends his efforts by working and volunteering with local environmental organizations to raise awareness about important environmental issues. Recently, he led a community service event where he coordinated the construction and installation of wooden pollinator nesting boxes in a local garden. This project not only provided a habitat for pollinators but also fostered a sense of community involvement and environmental stewardship.

Vince is determined to pursue his passion for computer science at a prestigious university where he can engage with like-minded and ambitious students and gain valuable knowledge from esteemed faculty members. His ultimate goal is to contribute towards the protection and enhancement of our environment by harnessing the power of cutting-edge computer science techniques, particularly in the field of machine learning.
